Constipation in Children

Updated: Mar 20, 2023

There are a lot of constipated kids living everyday with lots of issues - and providers prescribe Miralax. Are there any other remedies out there? Read on to find out!

Here are some symptoms of constipation in kids:

  • Less than three bowel movements a week

  • Bowel movements that are hard, dry and difficult to pass

  • Pain while having a bowel movement

  • Stomach pain

  • Traces of liquid or pasty stool in your child's underwear — a sign that stool is backed up in the rectum

  • Blood on the surface of hard stool

  • Showing signs of trying to hold stool in, such as clenching teeth, crossing legs, squeezing buttocks together, turning red in the face

  • pellet-like bowel movements

  • unusually large stools

  • Difficulties potty training

  • eczema, allergies, asthma can worsen or develop

  • Not hungry

What are the root causes of constipation in kids?

  • Leaky gut

  • Medication induced

  • Dairy sensitivity

  • Gluten sensitivity

  • Magnesium deficiency

  • Malnourished from the S.A.D (Standard American Diet) which is high is white flour, white sugar with little to no fiber.

  • Childhood trauma/anxiety/depression

  • Lack of exercise

  • Lack of Water

What can you do about it? So many things to try!

  • Go on a walk with your kids daily

  • Place out several water bottles around the house filled with water

  • Try 4 weeks of either:

1. Eliminating conventional dairy/CHEESE OR

2. Try Raw Milk/Raw cheese, but also limiting the amount.

  • Try 4 weeks of:

1. Eliminating conventional gluten products OR switch to making your own

sourdough breads. A lot of research is coming out suggesting that the TYPE of

dairy and wheat is HUGE. Raw dairy has the necessary cofactors/enzymes to

help digest lactose properly and sourdough has less gluten to digest as well as

the phytonutrients are properly broken down to be able to digest better.

  • Overhaul your child's diet. This is huge. We are so culturally used to catering to our child and giving the food they want. Focus on doing away with GMO foods/inflammatory oils and processed foods will help a ton.

  • Supplementing with magnesium in some form on a daily basis. Earthley Wellness has Good Night Lotion (topical magnesium) that is super helpful, and you can use it as needed through out the day on your kids. Also, magnesium citrate and magnesium hydroxide both stimulate the bowels.

  • Supplementing with Vitamin C on a daily basis can be helpful too! Adding Immune Aid to foods or smoothies is a great way! Or using Liquid Vitamin C

  • Using Castor Oil packs. Castor oil and a heating pad over the belly actually stimulates the bowels to move very effectively! So put on a show or read a good book while your kid has a castor oil pack on. Earthley Wellness has both the castor oil and pads for you.

  • Gut Health Oil by Earthley is a prebiotic, which helps the good bacteria flourish in the gut.

  • Probiotics daily - orally with a capsule or powder, yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut. This helps heal the leaky gut Dr. Green Mom has some fantastic blends like this one.

  • Poo Motion Tincture by Dr. Green Mom - safe blend of herbs that helps stimulate the bowels!

  • Foods: pears, prunes, flax meal...

  • Counseling if related to trauma
